The Christmas in Thirsk committee, volunteers funded by sponsors and Thirsk Town Council, switches the town's Christmas lights on from the Market Place. This year's switch-on has been reported for Friday 27 November, with the Christmas Fair in the Town Hall on Westgate that weekend, but the committee has not published the date or the times yet.

The 2024 switch-on was set for 6.30pm, with entertainment and Father Christmas. The Fair is stalls run by local makers and businesses, and on 2 October the committee said its last few stalls were going.

We are on the Market Place, so the switch-on is outside our door. We close at 4 on the Friday, and on the Saturday, a market day, we open at half past eight.
