For four weekends in October the National Trust lights the abbey and the water garden after dark. It is a different place at night, and it books out.

Fountains is about a thirty-five minute drive from Thirsk. Ticketing is separate from ordinary daytime entry, including for members, so check the National Trust page rather than assuming your card covers it.
