Between Christmas and New Year the North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs its Winter Steamer service every day from Sunday 27 December to Sunday 3 January, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Trains run between Pickering and Goathland with hop-on, hop-off stops at Levisham and Newtondale Halt, which is a request stop.

Two of the trips each way are steam-hauled: 10:45 and 13:45 from Pickering, and 12:30 and 15:35 from Goathland. The first trip out, 09:40 from Pickering, and the 11:35 back from Goathland are run by a 1903 North Eastern Railway autocar, which has fewer seats, so the railway suggests booking ahead.

An adult ticket is 24.95 and covers one child aged 4 to 15, with each extra child 6.50. The line beyond Goathland to Grosmont is closed for winter track, signal and bridge work. Pickering is about fifty minutes from Thirsk.
