Why go
Harlow Carr is the Royal Horticultural Society's garden in the north, 58 acres on the western edge of Harrogate. The Northern Horticultural Society bought the land in 1946 and opened the garden in 1950, and it joined the RHS in 2001. It drew 527,274 visitors in 2025.
It earns the drive in every season. In winter the Winter Garden carries the colour, and the garden stays open every day except Christmas Day. From late November the RHS Glow light trail turns it into an evening outing too. In spring and summer the streamside planting and the kitchen garden are at their best, and a fine day can easily stretch to a whole afternoon.
Getting there
From Tea Time Cafe on the Market Place, drive into Harrogate and take the Otley Road (B6162) west out of town to Crag Lane, where the garden has its own car parks. Allow about 45 minutes; the route through Harrogate can be slow at busy times.
The garden is also one of the easier day trips to make by public transport. Take the train from Thirsk to Harrogate, changing at York, and pick up bus 6 from stand 3 at the bus station, which sits next to the railway station. Get off at the Harlow Grange stop on Otley Road, and the garden is a five-minute walk. On a dry day you can walk the whole way from the town centre instead, about 1.5 miles through Valley Gardens and Pinewoods. A PlusBus add-on of 2 with your train ticket covers the bus, and arriving car-free takes 30% off your entry.
What to do
Start with the Streamside and the Queen Mother's Lake. From there, take in the Alpine House, the Kitchen Garden and the Winter Garden, which is the one to see in November. The woodland and arboretum walks lead out to the Thaliana Bridge, added in 2021.
The site's spa history is part of the visit. Harrogate's sulphur springs rise here, and the old bath house dates from 1844. The garden has its own café if you decide to stay on into the afternoon.
RHS Glow runs on selected evenings from 26 November to 30 December 2026, its tenth year at Harlow Carr, with eight new installations. It is ticketed separately from daytime entry, so book it on the RHS Glow page.
Best features
The range of planting is the main draw: water, woodland, alpines and a kitchen garden on one site. The year-round opening is the second: the garden is open every day but Christmas Day, and the Winter Garden gives a December visit a real reason. The prices reward planning, too. Booking a winter weekday drops an adult ticket to 13.60, coming by bus or train brings it to 12.90, and visitors on Universal Credit, Pension Credit or ESA pay 1, with up to five in their party.
Tips
Book online before you go, because the on-the-day price of 18.40 is the most expensive way in. In winter the last entry is at 3pm and the light goes soon after, so arrive by late morning to see the garden properly. Some of the valley paths are steep and get muddy, so wear boots, and pick up the map that marks the wheelchair-accessible routes if anyone in the group needs them. Mobility scooters can be booked ahead. Pet dogs stay at home, since only assistance dogs are allowed. For a fuller day, Knaresborough is on the way back towards Thirsk, and the Turkish Baths in Harrogate make a warm end to a cold garden morning.
Questions people ask
RHS Garden Harlow Carr, answered
How much does it cost to get in?
Adults pay from 13.60 booked online on a winter weekday, up to 18.40 on the day. Children aged 5 to 16 are 6, and under-5s go free. Booking ahead is the cheapest way in unless you arrive car-free.
Is it open in winter?
Yes, every day except Christmas Day. From 25 October to 28 February it opens 9.30am to 4pm, with last entry at 3pm.
Can I bring my dog?
Only guide, assistance and service dogs are allowed in the garden, so pet dogs need to stay at home. The RHS also advises against leaving pets in the car, since the car parks have little shade.
