Thirsk Racecourse

Flat racing since 1855 on a left-handed oval at the edge of town, with free parking and under-16s free

Why go

Thirsk has run flat racing since 1855 on a left-handed oval at the western edge of town, and the scale of the place is the appeal. Sixteen fixtures fill the calendar between April and September, and on a race day the whole town tilts towards Station Road. You can walk there from the Market Place, park for nothing if you drive, and get from Thirsk station to the gate in five minutes if you come by train. Under-16s go in free. For a first day at the races, few courses make it this easy.

Getting there

From Tea Time Cafe at 87 Market Place, head west out of the square and follow Station Road. It is 15 to 20 minutes on the flat, pavement all the way, and on race days you will not be walking alone.

By car, the course sits on the A61 Thirsk to Ripon road between the town centre and Carlton Miniott. Sat nav postcode YO7 1QL, and every car park is free. By train, Thirsk station is about five minutes' walk from the entrance, which is the single best argument for doing a race day here rather than somewhere larger.

What to do

Get there for the gates at 11am and use the time before the first race. Walk the course-side rail, study the form, and watch the horses come over from the stables; on a course this size you can stand at the parade ring without a scrum. Place a bet or do not, and either way the racing itself is the easy part to enjoy.

Between races there are bars and food outlets round the enclosures, and the Thomas Lord Restaurant if you want to sit down properly. Allow four to five hours for the whole afternoon or evening. Family themed days put on extra entertainment for children, which turns a fixture into a proper day out rather than an adults' outing.

Best features

Free parking and free entry for under-16s change the arithmetic of a family day at the races. The Hunt Cup and Irish Day are the two Saturdays regulars circle, and there is a country and western evening meeting in August that draws a different crowd entirely. The Premier season ticket covered all sixteen fixtures for 180 pounds in 2026, which pays for itself quickly if you go more than a handful of times. A new Premier Enclosure grandstand is due to be finished for the start of the 2027 season, replacing the old Paddock Stand beside the Parade Ring. And the five-minute station walk means a day here works from York or Northallerton with no car at all.

Tips

Check the fixture list on the racecourse's own site before you commit to a date. Listing sites have disagreed with the racecourse about the opener before, and the racecourse is the one that decides. The 2027 dates are on our own what's on page if you are planning ahead. Arrive for the 11am gates rather than turning up for the first race, because the hour beforehand is when a small course is at its best. Smart casual is fine everywhere, so do not overthink the clothes. Pre-book the Thomas Lord Restaurant if you want a table. Get lunch in town first, since the walk down takes 20 minutes and the food queues at the course build in the middle of the card. If you need to know about accessibility or bringing a dog, ring ahead, as neither is set out clearly in the published information.

Questions people ask

Thirsk Racecourse, answered

Is it flat racing or jumps?
Flat only. Thirsk has staged flat racing since 1855 and the track is a left-handed oval, so nothing here runs over obstacles.
How much is parking at Thirsk Racecourse?
Nothing at all. Every car park at the course is free, which is not something many racecourses can say. Sat nav postcode is YO7 1QL.
Do children pay to get in?
Under-16s go free. Adult prices vary by fixture and by enclosure, so check the racecourse site before you travel rather than guessing.
When does the season run?
April to September. The 2027 season has sixteen fixtures, opening on Saturday 17 April and finishing on Monday 13 September. Gates open at 11am on a race day.
Which are the fixtures to aim for?
In 2027 the Thirsk Hunt Cup falls on 1 May and Irish Day on 15 May, the two big Saturdays. Ladies' Day is Saturday 4 September, Country Music Night is the evening of Friday 13 August, and Family Days run on 23 July, 6 August and 27 August.
Is there a dress code?
Smart casual is welcome in every enclosure. Nobody will turn you away for arriving without a hat or a jacket.
Can I walk there from the Market Place?
Yes, 15 to 20 minutes west on the flat. If you are coming by train it is about five minutes from Thirsk station, which makes it one of the easiest courses in the country to reach without a car.
Are dogs allowed at the racecourse?
The dog policy is not published in the sources we checked. Assume assistance dogs only and ring the racecourse before you set off with one.
Where do we eat on a race day?
There are bars and food outlets around the enclosures, and the Thomas Lord Restaurant for a sit-down meal. Book the restaurant in advance, as it goes early on the bigger days.
